God with us, Immanuel (Part 1 - You're with us)
The God who spoke
I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to take possession of it (Gen 15:7, to Abraham)
I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you (Genesis 26:24, to Isaac)
I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. [...] I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you (Gen 28:13,15, to Jacob)
Jacob! Jacob! [...] I am God, the God of your father. [...] Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt [...] I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again. (Gen 46:2-4)
I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. (Exodus 3:6, to Moses)
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt (Exodus 20:2) with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm (Deut 26:8)
As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. [...] Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. (to Joshua, Joshua 1:5,9)
But now be strong, O Zerubbabel. Be strong, O Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land and work. For I am with you. This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear. (Haggai 2:4-5)
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27)
Is still with us -- even today.
… and they will call him Immanuel” -- which means, “God with us.” (Matthew 1:23)
[the Father] will give you another Counselor to be with you forever -- the Spirit of truth. [...] But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. (John 14:16-18)
Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you. (Hebrews 13:5)
And is interceding for us. (Romans 8)
We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.
If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all -- how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? [...] Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died -- more than that, who was raised to life -- is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. What shall separate us from the love of Christ?
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
He will take great delight in you,
He will quiet you with his love,
He will rejoice over you with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)
You hem me in -- behind and before;
You have laid your hand upon me. [...]
Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
If I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
If I settle on the far side of the sea,
Even there your hand will guide me,
Your right hand will hold me fast. [...]
All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!
Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand.
